We believe that learning happens as a result of interactions between and amongst children and adults. The teacher’s role is to create an intellectual and stimulating environment that is emotionally safe and done in a supportive setting that encourages a child’s overall development. The importance of respect for self, respect for others and respect for the environment is stressed with the children. Our first goal is to create a safe and nurturing atmosphere.
Opportunities are provided for the children to actively engage in meaningful activities. Through these experiences children become involved in their learning. We base our curriculum on a child-initiated approach. As teachers, our goal is to work in a partnership with children to develop ideas and topics that are relevant to them. We document their interests and questions to learn with them. Much of this documentation is present in the school for families to review. Teachers keep an in-depth journal for each child.
The thematic curriculum that we are creating provides opportunities for children to nurture all of the intelligences in a variety of ways through multiple modes of expression. The classroom is arranged in learning stations. The stations include art, science and math, reading, blocks, puzzles, manipulatives, writing, computer and dramatic play. The emphasis is on creative expression and problem solving. We have a balance of child directed and teacher directed activities during the day. This includes individual, small, and whole group work, fine and gross motor activities, indoor and outdoor play, and quiet time as well as active time. Children are actively supported to grow to their greatest potential.
